Roblox and Zoom are hooking up!

🎮 ROBLOX AND ZOOM ARE HOOKING UP!

Roblox now has a video-chat option for gamers! Simply put, that means your Roblox obsessed ten-year-old can now pop onto a zoom call with ANYONE at ANYTIME using the Roblox platform.

The feature, which is called Roblox Connect, will run on any device that already runs Roblox, provided that device has a camera. Instead of showing our children’s faces, for now, after taking face focal point ‘pictures’ of your child’s face, the program makes a 3D look-alike avatar of your child – one step better than photorealistic. It also places our children in virtual spaces rather than showing their real-life backgrounds.

Face-tracking tech can now also mimic facial expressions and movements in people’s Roblox avatars. This gives real-life expressions to the user’s Roblox avatar that accurately reflects their emotions. Even though Roblox promises they are doing this on the user’s device and says it’s not sending any personal data to the cloud, it only requires one online predator to take a screen shot of your little one’s avatar and then use it to garner information about him/her.

Roblox also promises that only one-on-one video chats will be allowed to start, for ages 13 and up, and Roblox users have to have each other stored as contacts in order to communicate via video chat. Well we all know that many children just fake their ages when signing up, so this is hardly a safeguard, especially as our children often want to game with older more sophisticated players so that they can learn some high-flying skill sets.

Roblox developers will also soon be able to chat with a virtual assistant to ask for help with coding or to quickly spin up new virtual scenes, like “Create a forest scene with different kinds of trees and a crackling campfire.” Great right? Except for the loss of creativity skills that come with it!

To top it all, last year, almost 40% of active users on Roblox were 17 or over, and 17-to-24-year-olds became the fastest-growing age group on Roblox. This new category of Roblox users means more graphic content and more adult themes, like depictions of heavy bloodshed and alcohol use in a game setting. Accessing these themes requires of a simple upload of a selfie. Need we say more?

SO WHAT MUST I DO? ⁉️

1. Lockdown the controls – Make sure that  if and when your child does use Roblox, the Roblox parental controls are activated –  every single one! (Including locking down the chat function)  Download our Ultimate Parents Guide to Roblox for everything toy need to know to make sure they are safe on Roblox (https://klikd.co.za/resource-center/)

2. Check in frequently -Know what they’re playing, who they’re chatting with, and where they’re hanging out on Roblox.

3. Step away from the Device : Initiate a conversation with your t(w)een away from the device where they feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and emotions –think casual walk while looking for a new swimming cozi at Woolies.

SO WHAT MUST I SAY? 💬⁉️

1. Start with the good stuff: 😇 Begin the conversation by acknowledging their love for Roblox. Ask them what they love about it, which part excites them, how it feels when they get it right.  Let them know that you understand the excitement and pleasure they derive from it.

2. 🎮 I heard about this cool new feature on Roblox called Roblox Connect. Did you know that now you can video chat with other players right from the game? What do you think about that?”

3. 😯 I read an article about Roblox Connect, and it mentioned that your Roblox avatar can mimic your facial expressions and movements really well. It’s pretty cool, but it also got me thinking about privacy. How do you feel about sharing your feelings online? You know if someone sees your avatar (which is really you) having a temper tantrum when you lose, they could use that against you, right? Or do you think an avatar keeps you safe? What about the fact that a really realistic avatar gives the person a really good idea of what you look like?

3. 🔒 I read that Roblox Connect also allows one-on-one video chats if you are older than 13. That’s a good step, but sometimes people lie about their age online. How can we make sure you’re talking to someone safe? Do you know what to do if you feel uncomfortable during a chat?”

4. 💡 Roblox developers will soon have access to a virtual assistant to help with coding and creating virtual scenes. While it sounds really exciting, I wonder if it might affect how creative you can be ? What are your thoughts on using virtual assistants for gaming and coding?”

5. 🕹️ I was surprised to find out that a lot of much older users are joining Roblox, and some of the games are becoming more mature with scary/ graphic content like bloodshed and alcohol use. (Amend according to the age of your child). How do you feel about playing games with older players? Do you think it’s important to stick to games that are age-appropriate?
