ChatGPT just upgraded. Version 5.0 is here and this new version is a massive leap forward. Unlike its predecessors, which were primarily text-based, GPT-5 is now unified system. Simply put that means it understands and generates text, images, and voice with unprecedented nuance. It’s smarter, faster, and more integrated, giving it a much deeper understanding of context and emotion.
This new level of sophistication changes everything for our kids, creating both unprecedented opportunities for our children and new, more complex risks we need to be aware of.
The Caution Flags: A New Level of Concern
• Emotional Blurring: This is the most significant new risk. GPT-5’s ability to communicate with greater emotional intelligence and remember context from past conversations makes it a more convincing “confidant.” This can create a deeper, more personal connection that could lead our kids relying even more on an AI for emotional support instead of a human connection.
• Deep Fakes: With GPT-5’s advanced multimodal abilities, our children will be exposed to or even create disturbingly realistic deepfake images or voices. This means even more realistic nude images of our kids will be surfacing at schools, it means voices will be able to sound more and more like friends asking them for a money because they are in a tight squeeze (think scam) and it means a lot more teachers will become the butt of our kids’ online ‘humour’
• Sophisticated Manipulation: A less-than-perfect AI is one thing, but a hyper-intelligent, convincing one is another. GPT-5 is so good at reasoning that it can more effectively influence and manipulate. We need to be vigilant and teach our kids to question everything, especially from a tool that seems just “perfect.”

It’s time to RE-ENGAGE on the topic of AI both in and outside of the classrooms. Even if you have had a few chats, have more. We can never talk about this enough. As it evolves, so must we. That doesnt mean we have to stay fully on top of every advance in the AI world (we will try to do that for you, it means checking in, chatting, and choosing what you will and won’t allow.
The conversations we have been having about old chatbots are not enough. To move it up a notch try:

1. Talk about the “why.” Instead of asking what they use it for, ask why they choose to use it over other tools. “Why do you feel this new version is better than the last one?”
2. Use it together, on a complex project. Version 5.0 can build apps! Try to build a small app or create an intricate image with your child. This shows you’re engaged in their world and gives you a clear view of the AI’s capabilities and its limitations. It also will allow you to watch just how fast and furiously well they can use AI already!
3. Teach them to be the final voice. The AI can give them an idea, but their voice, their unique perspective, and their ability to think for themselves are what truly matter. Empower them to be the human in the loop.
